Ducky's Surgery

Ducky turned one on August 2nd, 2009; we have been waiting until he strong enough to be neutered. We contacted the vet and made an appointment for him to also have his shots. Needless to say, I was very nervous.

He had his surgery on Sept. 29 and pulled through with flying colors. He tested negative for heartworms. We were told that Ducky has very many baby teeth that didn't fall off on their own and he will need to have surgery to take these teeth out and try to give some kind of normal shape to his mouth. Teeth grew in his pallet and will need to be repaired.

Ducky is already very small and lost a few ounces during his 2 days in the hospital. We will let him gain weight and recover before taking him in for dental surgery. His mouth will be sore and will probably make him eat less during recovery. He desperately needs to be a little fatter before going through this ordeal.

August 2, 2009 - I am ONE today!

Mom is thrilled... so am I! Mom didn't expect me to live to this age but I made and I am doing very well thank you! I heard her say I would get new toys today... can't wait to see what it's going to be!

Although I still have issues with spinning on the left side sometimes, I do it much less than I used to. I don't grind my teeth anymore. My baby teeth were taken out and it went very well.

I play with toys and my siblings and I love it when mom cuddles me and gives me kisses. That gives me a boost of energy and happiness, and I step and jump and run when she puts me down. That is how I show her I'm a happy boy.

Day 67

Ducky got his first complete grooming. He did so well given his condition! As any normal pup, he didn't appreciate having his face messed with. My daughter held him and reassured him and my groomer worked her magic.

Although Ducky loves to play in the water bowl, he doesn't enjoy bathtime as much. He had one very short screaming fit during grooming and over all did well.

He gained a couple of ounces and looks a tiny bit fuller, which is good. Regardless, at 9 months old, he still looks much smaller than our newest foster at 2.68 pounds, a 9-week old miniature Schnoodle. Baci and Ducky have been eating together and Baci eats more and sleeps less.

Baci has been trying to play with Ducky without real success. I guess this little Schnoodle is a little too active for Ducky who feels comfortable with the dogs in the pack at this time.

Take a look at our handsome boy!

Day 61

Ducky is off medication and he is doing very well. He has gotten into playing with toys AND with the other dogs. He loves the water bowl and is constantly in it, making rivers on the kitchen floor. He also has been enjoying the nice weather outside and likes to walk with me in the wooded area of our backyard.

A huge THANK YOU to Susan for sending Ducky a nice and comfy doggie bed and small toys for him and the others. He loves to crawl in his new bed and snooze. I take it outside sometimes and he falls asleep in it while I am sitting in the swing next to him, working on my laptop.

This boy simply loves to be cuddled and to be given kisses. He gets them a minimum of 10 thousand times a day!

Day 53

Ducky is officially off medication. For some reason, the meds are making him confused and he turns in circles non-stop. We have decided to try taking him off and he is doing much better, playing, running, teasing the others and just being a happy 9-month old puppy, playing in the water bowl and just doing puppy things.

He gained a few more ounces, although he is not very big. He is now at 3 1/2 pounds. If he keeps on improving at that rate, he will be able to have his extra teeth removed from his mouth, which will be a great improvement for him as he will be able to close his mouth normally. He is much stronger than he was.

Ducky is a sweet boy and he pitches tantrums less and less. The anger level is going down. There is still a lot of work to do with him and he is getting better and learning new things everyday. He is an inquisitive little guy and when you think he is not around, he is right between your feet.

Thank you so much for all the donations we have received so far for Ducky. We have not met our goal yet but it's still time to contribute to his mouth surgery. Every penny helps!

Also a big thank you to Suzan who sent Ducky a lovely doggie bed and small toys for him. I will post a photo shortly of him and his new treasures.

Day 47

Our little boy has been very active today and had a couple of fits. There was no way he was going to let me clean his eyes and he threw a few tantrums. Of course, he didn't get out of this a winner. He got his eyes clean regardless of his intimidation attempts. The good part is that he doesn't bite me anymore when he gets all upset. Good thing for me, because I was about to run out of fingers!

He has been playful, generally happy and he attempted to catch "that dog" he sees in the stainless steel water bowl, creating a river of water on the kitchen floor doing so.

The medication to relieve the pressure on his brain seems to be working for him. He is much more interested in interacting with the other dogs and not be so afraid of them (Ducky with Sammie Poochon in a doggie bed, photo on upper left). At this point, his favorite pal in our pack is our Giant Schnoodle, Maddie, who looks after him and makes sure he is safe and close to me.

Day 40

I prayed for today to be better for Ducky and it was. He didn't circle around as much like he did yesterday and he was interested in playing with fleece toys. Pooh Bear, one of my Yorkies, got close and initiated play. Ducky watched him for a bit and tried to imitate him!

After a little playtime with Pooh Bear and toys, he looked for me and came to be loved on. He gets picked up and kissed and cuddled a gazillion times a day and he loves every bit of it. He grabbed my finger between his teeth to nibble on it... no biting this time, just doggie affection!
